One Week Job, Anyone? A Year of First-Day-On-The-Job Mondays

Every week, I check out Sean Aiken (above) and Ian MacKenzie’s site at www.OneWeekJob.com  Sean is a 26-year-old Canadian with a degree in business and a lot of travel miles under his belt.  He is committed to finding work that he is passionate about, but hey, there are so many options out there that it’s hard to choose just one.  So, he decided to devote himself to a new job each week for a year and donate his pay to the Make Poverty History/ONE campaign (total raised as of week #35:  over $14,000).

Anyone can hire Sean for a week, and he will show up and energetically dive into that particular job.  The employer gets some publicity and a free worker.  Sean gets to learn about a job that he’d probably never get to taste otherwise.  Those of us who visit the site get a chance to see (videos of each week!) what it’s like to travel around and have that first-day-of-work experience every single Monday.

I think this is a great idea.  I’m not suggesting that every student or recent grad try to maintain this for a year, but I’m all for exploration and discovery, whether that means trying new schools, new towns, new countries or new jobs.

By the way, Ian has a very cool project of his own.  Check out his site–one of my favorites for travel and the expat life–at www.BraveNewTraveler.com  Ian launched this site after he and Sean developed  www.TravelBlogger.com

Three cheers for innovation and the courage to pursue new possibilities!
